Banking and Financial Careers

Class Description: This 2-semester course prepares students for entry-level positions in the financial field. Students will work on the necessary foundation standards to be successful. Students will learn how to handle cash transactions, sell financial products and services, set up and maintain accounts. Students will also learn to evaluate loan or credit applications, understand the importance of good customer/member service. After successful completion of a 6-week orientation in the classroom the students will complete a community classroom internship at a financial institution, returning to class once a week for related instruction. Students will understand and demonstrate professional dress, confidentiality, punctuality and attendance, good interpersonal working relationships and diversity awareness. Students will also: Operate office equipment and computers Apply alpha/numeric filing procedures Demonstrate telephone etiquette Understand federal banking regulations and policies Maintain security and safety Reconcile accounts and perform basic accounting Develop a career portfolio to include a résumé, cover letter, references and industry evaluations. Students must be bondable in order to participate in the community classroom component. Community classroom participation is required in order to receive a certificate of completion. Recommended: Light keyboarding, strong math skills, attention to detail, excellent communication skills.
